I first of all have a problem with the term 'avant-garde'. Because it is a military term, it means the guard that runs before the rest of the soldiers. And if I want to see myself presented in military terms, I don't want to be part of that. I want to be one of the deserters. I want to be in the woods, maybe.
Blixa Bargeld
Vampires pretending to be humans pretending to be vampires ... How avant-garde!
Anne Rice
I was part of the sort of avant guard tradition of John Cage and music concrete and pushing back the boundaries of avant garde classic pop rhythms. I think everyone brings something completely different to it.
Anne Dudley
We met [with Massimo Pupillo] many years ago in the halcyon days of the underground avant-prog math-rock scene when I was playing in Guapo.
Daniel O'Sullivan
The avant-garde understands itself as invading unknown territory, exposing itself to the dangers of sudden, shocking encounters, conquering an as yet unoccupied future ... The avant-garde must find a direction in a landscape into which no one seems to have yet ventured.
Jurgen Habermas
I still feel that sincerity and realism are avant-garde, or can be, just as I did when I started out.
Edmund White
To some degree, yeah, because I have to play a certain number of originals that might be considered avant-garde material. I realize though, that only a few people in the audience actually know what that music is, or understand it.
Archie Shepp
There is a certain kind of person who is so dominated by the desire to be loved for himself alone that he has constantly to test those around him by tiresome behavior what he says and does must be admired, not because it is intrinsically admirable, but because it is his remark, his act. Does not this explain a good deal of avant-garde art?
W. H. Auden
I've hardly had an avant-garde career ... If you're going to make a film, you have to try to make sure it comes out of a childlike passion, as if you're doing it for the first time.
Alan J. Pakula
In the '60s, people were still very protective of each field that they belonged to. Avant-garde artists didn't know about rock or pop or jazz. And the jazz people of course didn't want to know about any other music. They were all just kind of protecting their territory.
Yoko Ono
The spirit of adventure to embrace the new and the incredible belief in the power of invention attracted me to the Russian avant-garde.
Zaha Hadid
My dad was this sort of avant-garde guy who did all kinds of weird things. He was a true original and anybody who met him never forgot him.
Paul Thomas Anderson
It's so easy to be mistaken about the future. Sometimes there are avant-gardes which believe themselves to be the avant-garde and which later find themselves to be absolutely dated.
Simone de Beauvoir
I'm really attracted to music that sort of toes that line between pop and avant-garde, that pushes the envelope of what you can get in a pop song.
Patrick Stump
In short, it occurred to me that perhaps the only possible avant garde is the avant garden.
Hakim Bey
I don't think that my work appeals that much to the hard-core, avant-garde film audience. They appeal to people who teach film and those establishment figures on the East Coast.
Lawrence Jordan
Avant-garde is the one area of music that has never changed. It doesn't mean anything.
Jeff Tweedy
I think I give far more space and play to avant-garde writing than any other contemporary textbook author. I want students to be able to decide for themselves which aesthetics are closest to their own. Still, while I try not to be a nostalgist myself, I suppose I am drawn to those poignant moments in our lives, rendered clearly and artfully.
David Starkey
I grew up mostly in Champaign, Illinois. My dad was at the University of East Illinois, so I was always around the music. One of my dad's buddies was the avant-garde composer John Cage, so I picked up on that weird classical and eclectic music.
Stuart Hamm
Boston is not an avant garde place. It stays literally 15 to 20 years behind New York at all times.
Paul Laffoley
It is not possible to be original by trying to be original - those who attempt this in the arts will be merely avant-garde. Originality is the product of an impulse to intense and overwhelming that it bursts the conventions and produces something new - again more by accident than design.
Michael Foley
Picasso never thought of himself as avant-garde. I just find it a bad way to think of yourself.
Simone de Beauvoir
The avant-garde and the beatniks share in the function of entertaining without endangering the good conscience of the men of good will.
Herbert Marcuse
We will have to create an avant-garde.... We could have a Union for the enlarged Europe, and a Federation for the avant-garde.
Jacques Delors
